Haven’t used it myself yet but seconding the calibre recommendation based on research I did while belatedly shifting into reading ebooks on a kobo: calibre-ebook.com

I taught with these materials after mutation and before selection and gene flow. Many of my intro bio students now say "... well drift is happening all the time" in response to being asked about how evolution might be acting in various scenarios. 💖

We put together slides for three short lectures and created six activities, including data from scientific papers, simulations, Queer theory, and a poem! We aimed for the intro bio level, but I'm sure these can be adapted for upper level too.

Undergrad students often forget about genetic drift as an evolutionary process/ force. If you've also experienced this, we might have a solution for you! Our RIE2 (resources for inclusive evolution education) working group just published a week-length drift module: qubeshub.org/publications...
Teaching genetic drift: new approaches to encourage non-deterministic thinking about evolution
This teaching module is designed to help undergraduate students dismantle preconceived notions about evolution and deepen their understanding of genetic drift as a non-deterministic evolutionary proce...

The mysteries abound!

Unfortunately I don’t have a solid answer for how sex works in Amoebozoa!
suegenenoh.bsky.social
The way I have been thinking about it (in single cell amoebas for context) is mother to daughter cell is vertical, one individual to another is horizontal. I lean toward one individual to another as horizontal regardless of genotype too.
suegenenoh.bsky.social
Maybe sexual transmission? Since it’s specifically in the context of sex. Otherwise I’d lean vertical.

Can you add me too Adriana, thanks!

Out today! Our review on the current evidence of protein import into endosymbionts/early organelles. We cover protists, insects and plant systems, so something for everybody!

With Mygg Stiller, Lena Kröninger and Eva Nowack.

The acquisition of bacterial endosymbionts by ancient host cells followed by massive adaptation of the partners gave rise to mitochondria and plastids. Today, various systems with younger and less in...

OK folks, I want to share with you my best homebrew use case for LLMs in teaching. Here, I’ll show you how to make detailed, textbook-style notes for your students based on a transcript of your lecture and your PowerPoint. I’ve done this for the last 2 semesters and the students love it. 1/16

Beetles are masters at coopting microbial genes, enzymes & metabolites.

Together w/ Marleny García-Lozano, we review how microbes shaped one of the most successful animal radiations, through horizontal gene transfer & symbiosis:

Excited to share my recent review with Ross Fitzgerald on host adaptation by bacterial pathogens. Summarizes a lot of ideas and literature that came out of my sabbatical in his group last year. #Microsky academic.oup.com/femsre/artic...
