Aside from being racist and sexist as fuck, mastodon is also unfortunately a patter void, a space where even if you yourself bring decent patter, it cannot survive

Slightly freaked out by how well the youtube algorithm on our telly appears to know us lol

I prefer to communicate with computers in exactly the same way I communicate with human beings, extremely patronisingly 👍🏻

Don't like this thing I get paid to work on and that your participation made valuable? Why not work on it yourself for free! Are we cursed to never learn anything from open source lol fuck sake.

If you don't like the way I'm running the app you're using go ahead and build your own version on top of the platform I am also leading is.. certainly an interesting argument lol
suesmith.lol
Or better still, learning how to stop talking to them lolol

Anyway seeing tech company executives not know how to do basic workplace shit folk who do minimum wage service jobs learn almost immediately never gets old does it
suesmith.lol
"We're system architects at core" in response to a complete and utter failure to think systemically about the platform you're building is something else tbh

Hiya, *people who already know how to code* using AI to make things by generating the code does not mean no one needs to know how to code anymore, that's no how this works
suesmith.lol
I've known a few folk from poor backgrounds who became successful musicians, some of their lives went to shit and others didn't.. Honestly it was the same being in tech at a particular time, money being thrown at you, you have to decide is it an arbitrary twist of fate or just that I'm special lol

I mean more than 'a lot of police support the far right' btw. we need to put that in context with the rate of domestic violence in police, the rate of sexual assaults and rapes, the way they actually manage 'crime' and who they see as their enemies, and understand what they are and who they serve

at some point we actually have to put two and two together here

This is where I diverge from these alarm bells

"Teams that care about quality will take the time..."

Laying the blame at the team level is a red herring, in reality organisational and economic factors will determine the approach

For dependencies there's "community" oversight to an extent, but imo that ticking timebomb paved the way for this much bigger one.
suesmith.lol
Let's not pretend that before LLMs everyone was taking the time to fully understand changes before approving them, the economic dynamics made that impossible. As for dependencies, it became normal to rely on code you had no expectation of understanding, it's a difference in perceived accountability.

My hope is that this forces a long overdue reckoning with the extent to which we do (don't) understand codebases in general. From importing a ton of dependencies to copy paste from stack overflow and team member churn / absence, code comprehension has been increasing in urgency for some time.
