it really depends since it's not ALWAYS gonna be impossible when like that, but I've had more than a handful of refs that had gradients and the color swatch was incomplete so I have to go back and make late-stage changes

that's much more fine given there's nothing complex and it still clearly conveys everything, 3d models make more sense to have it this way, but I'd also recommend playing with some shaders if that's possible!
