i’d also hesitate to call poorly organized or unoptimized code “imperfect” if the player doesn’t experience adverse effects. like it literally does not affect the quality at all if the player can’t even see it

if you wanna make art just for you, that’s great. there’s really no way to fail at that. if other people relate to that and like your art, then that’s beautiful. if you wanna make art to show the world something, you have to play the game, or the world won’t pay attention. shrimple as that

realized this makes almost no sense because i had to make it fit in a post. basically i mean that most artists want to be heard, and if you want to be heard, there are conventional methods that we know from experience will work. that’s the point of objective analysis, to find out what works and why
May 31, 2025 at 7:12 PM
thats not useful to a game developer though. like that’s cool if you’re a reviewer on youtube, but when you’re an artist who makes stuff you do have to do research in order to accomplish what you want to. in the case of most games you want to craft an experience that most people will have playing it

what is good design comes down to what you’re trying to do. so if you try to make a challenging game about going fast, but your character is so fast that they fly past the level without encountering a challenge, you’ve failed and that’s objectively bad design. that’s how i see it
