As always, we remain cautiously optimistic. Calf survival rates are low within the first year, with an estimated 50% survival rate, and last year we saw the mortality of 3 newborn calves.

The Bigg's killer whale nick-naming group made up of regional naturalists, researchers, and educators has recently voted on common names for 12 young members of the population!
*Note that some whales might have more than one common name, and it's okay to call them whatever is meaningful to you!

March was a record-setting month for orca sightings in the Salish Sea, with 2025 on track to be another banner year for Bigg's killer whales with their presence confirmed in local waters for the first 90 days of the year.
