i made a website for my new fielding win probability stat, with a leaderboard & individual play breakdowns :)

had to delete a tongue-in-cheek devin williams hate post cause it reached 1000 likes.
critical support to the only screwballer in the league even if he refuses to recognize that he is

we should have a double first base but not with all of those weird college rules, just treat it as one big base

my simulations agree that jazz’s sweet spot is shifted down, but nothing crazy!

we’re so back

oh no, more correct calls. can’t let that happen
If and when robo umps arrive in MLB, the strike-zone box you've seen on TV for almost a quarter century — K-Zone, as it's called on ESPN — might disappear.

Why? Cheating is one of the league's concerns.

The robo ump could cause a unexpected casualty: the TV strike zone box
MLB is weighing options to dramatically reduce or remove the ubiquitous broadcast strike zone box as part of bringing the robo ump online.

my quick and dirty averaging of 6 projections together and testing out different fielding alignments says that the red sox gain a more than a win by putting bregman at 2nd, campbell in left, and pushing ceddanne to the bench, compared to any alignment that keeps ceddanne in the lineup

something interesting is that minimum in the energy.
for any speed of the sweet spot, the pivot which generates that speed & minimizes the kinetic energy will always be the same spot.

I did the lagrange multipliers, it’s always a distance I_com/(m(x_swsp-x_com)) below the centre of mass
when you compare swings with the same statcast bat speed, the bat actually has less energy when it’s rotating about a higher pivot, but still generating higher EVs nevertheless.

we’re still only talking about ~0.5 mph of EV for reasonable shifts in pivot point though, maybe 1 mph if ur lucky.

more neat bat-ball collision stuff

if two swings have the same reported bat speed on baseball savant, but one has a higher pivot point to its rotation, that one will generate higher max EVs (and it'll do so slightly farther up the barrel)

got the $10 to fangraphs paypal notif in the middle of reading this

btw i call this guy Cori, because all the rotating frames of reference
because i haven’t posted it here yet, this is something i have been working on and got “working” recently, the flow of energy through body segments during a swing.

i don’t trust it’s totally correct yet but it’s something like that, and looks pretty cool

i’ve honestly kinda perfected doing the right hand rule with my left hand and fucking everything up for days
January 26, 2025 at 11:41 PM
@tangotiger.com this is how i got the swing plane. i said that the normal vector is the cross product of these two vectors which i figured must live in the plane and should work even for weird bat motions (i think)

long thread time.

i set out to answer a question and the result wasn’t *nothing* it was just, nothing
does the comfort of knowledge make up for the lost time? no

this is a thread about squared up rate, why it’s inherently biased, and how (if you would please consult the graph) that doesn’t matter

was watching a presentation where the guy was introducing the early work on a topic with a screenshot of a snippet of a paper, but then said “that’s the whole paper by the way”
