The only true death of a soulmate animal happened at the end of the human they represent's life. Once the tether between the souls had be cut permanently, they crumbled away like ash on the wind. Ghost wondered how it felt, to be left with the reminder of your other half's perception of you. Whether it would hurt more or less to lose that last piece of your person, the piece that had been with you for so long. He wondered which would hurt more: losing a soulmate you had grown to love, or losing a soulmate you'd never gotten to know at all. Soulmate animals couldn't die. That didn't mean they couldn't be killed, at least for a little while. Bubble had been killed three times that Ghost can remember.

I’ve been moving into my new apartment (!!!!) all this week so I haven’t gotten much writing done, but I guess I can share a little bit of a gift fic im working on for #WIPWednesday

Ghoap soulmate au 💀🧼
Warmth brushed against his fingertips. Warmth? Warmth was a precious commodity in the Riley household. Physical warmth was fleeting, chased away by freezing drafts and broken windows and broken raidators. And warmth of another kind, from gentle touches and soft looks, was saved for lonesome nights and locked doors. For waiting for snores and sneaking beneath worn-thin blankets. Those few snatches of comfort he held close to his chest, fingers bloodless and white from his tight grip. Warmth wasn't something that he felt on a night like this, when he could feel his whole body aching and pounding in time with the erratic beat of his heart. So why was there something warm, something soft and comforting and warm, plastered to his shivering back? Simon didn't want to look. He knew he shouldn't look. Looking would break this dream, shatter this moment of peace and quiet that was so fucking rare in this goddamn house. Looking would snatch this right from his hands, tearing it and the last scrap of hope he had left in his shriveled, bleeding heart. He looked over his shoulders, brown eyes wide and bloodshot. It was a dog. Simon blinked. The dog didn't disappear. A dog. No, not a dog. A puppy. Long limbed and gangly, vibrating energy in spite her tiny body, with big paws and bigger ears. Short, dark fur, too dark to see in the shadows of his room, covered every inch of her. A long, thin tail beat a constant, fast rhythm against the black fabric of his old bedspread. Liquid brown eyes, shining beetle-black and dark in the cool light of the moon leaking from between the slats of his tangled blinds, peered up at him. When their eyes met, the puppy lunged for him. Simon flinched back, eyes squeezing shut instinctively. Snake scales and ivory fangs flashed behind his eyes. He could feel the teeth breaking skin, the blood bubbling up and running in thick rivulets down his face, his neck, his arms. He could smell the iron in the air, the copper on his tongue. He braced for the pain. Pain didn't come. That same warm, wet feeling painted thick stripes across his nose and cheeks. A tongue. It was a tongue. The puppy was licking him. (Kissing him, his mom might have said. But she didn't say much of anything these days.) Covering his face with slobber, something that should have disgusted him but just left him stunned. When he didn't shove her off, the puppy's tail kicked into a higher gear, pounding even harder against his mattress, sending a cacaphony of rusted squeaks through the silent night air.
