My first Yakuza game was 3. Next game I played was 4. And before 0 came out, I knew Kiryu's taxi life, but without most of that context.
How I interpreted going back to older stories, or in 0's case a new story that took place in the past was, I'm catching up with Kiryu after meeting him in 3.

7 is a pretty good place to start.
Gaiden is a good game to introduce new players to Kiryu's character. Maybe not his full history, but his character.

No Yakuza Like a Dragon fact is useless.
