Definitely do that too. I am right there with you with FUBAR'd vision—and that distance toggle has helped me quite a bit.

There are also 2 other variations of the Drop Guide in the Game settings that may assist with this too.

I'd suggest going into Options, Accessibility and change the playfield transparency to OFF (this puts a black background behind the playfield), Camera Distance to VERY NEAR, and turn off some of the other effects there or dial them down to VERY SUBTLE.
