That policy would let people make all the death threats they want as long as they wrap it in a joke, meme, or cultural reference.

these two posts probably put it better than I can:
I mean, there are a lot of song lyrics I can quote that would violate the ToS, and I shouldn't be surprised if they sound a lot like unambiguous violations of the ToS to anyone else

sure, but social media moderation is not decided in a court of law

I don't think it's reasonable to expect others (including moderators) to have the same cultural knowledge or frame of reference *when you're typing out something that clearly reads as a threat*

if you don't think that "I want to shoot the author of this article just to watch him die" counts as a threat to kill someone, I'm not sure what to say

to be clear, I'm not saying that she intended it to be a threat

but the plain meaning of the words are a threat

she was already posting about it on Substack and Twitter, so that ship had sailed

and if you look at the thread that Aaron commented in, there were numerous requests to hear Bluesky's side

context should always be taken into account in moderation decisions

but just because a threat to kill someone is an altered song lyric that doesn't mean it's OK to post it as a joke

I mean, it's a tricky balance

as Aaron said here, they don't usually comment on individual cases

but when it's someone high-profile, not saying anything can look cagey and like they have something to hide or they're not willing to defend their actions
Our policy has been not to comment on individual accounts. You end up having to litigate every case in public, and we don’t have the capacity for infinite debates in public.

Then there’s also the consequences such as the increased litigation and bad actors gaming your systems.

@bnewbold.net @aaron.bsky.team @pfrazee.com I am pleading once again for moderation history to be prioritised, and for it to be viewable by an account owner in the takendown state (like the appeal form is)

this would help prevent so many moderation issues turning into PR clusterfucks

... and for @safety.bsky.app to subsequently then get the date of her post wrong in the thread... yikes... not good at all

(they subsequently posted a correction, but not as many people will see that, and Sarah understandably accused them of lying about the date in her Substack note)

... they apparently have a moderation backlog of *a month*?? wtf??

Bsky say they informed her of the reason for the suspension immediately, but she says she wasn't told, so something obviously went wrong somewhere :/

sorry to be that guy, but I think you might mean stenography?

steganography is "the practice of concealing messages or information within other non-secret text or data"
