My favorite materials are daylily, dandelion stems, cattail, crocosmia, Siberian iris, corn husk, and banana peel (for a nice black contrast).
I've never tried hydrangea stems.
I dry everything first, for days or weeks depending on plant variety, then mellow in damp towels when I'm ready to weave.
