Journalist Edward R. Murrow used his platform on CBS to criticize the witch hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.

This is what real journalism should do — hold power to account, not capitulate to it.

These people are doing their best to keep track. Someday these lawless officials will be held to account in court.

Thoughts from today: when you're sharing news stories, are you framing your presentation of said story in a way that promotes your ultimate goal of restoring democracy? Are you motivating people to take action? Or scaring the shit out of them? Is your framing aiding the fascists or fighting them?

But this is buried in here: “A list of proposed reforms meant to improve military recruitment includes one that would require all students at federally funded schools to complete the military’s entrance exam. But it wouldn’t force them to enlist or involve a draft.”

Acquiescence, despair, apathy, nihilism… none of that is helpful right now.

There are wonderful, independent reporters working hard to provide us with real news. They deserve our support—especially at this critical time in our history. Many good people on Substack.

Yep. They want to control the narrative. These Republican-led maneuvers are intended to make us dumber, poorer, sicker, weaker.

I heard it had to do with their lithium reserves. Pretty sure that’s what these people want.

Good idea! You might be able to dig into Open Secrets and the Federal Election Commission Campaign Finance data tool (www.fec.gov/data/) in order to start compiling a list. Of course, the guy’s swimming in $$

It’s Wednesday! Weren’t we supposed to get to see that today?
susanbrackney.bsky.social
Exactly! These are masked, unidentified, bottom-of-the-barrel opportunists. And that description is generous.

Ugh. So it’s not just us in the United States? What has happened to the world? 🙁

“Too much us vs them propaganda.” This is everything.

Each of us has the power to counteract this in our personal lives. We have to knit together our local communities, even though the powers that be are working so hard to tear us apart.

Apparently, we can do an end run around Mike Johnson, who refuses to swear in recently (and duly) elected AZ Rep #AdelitaGrijalva.

Use www.pleasegrowaspine.org to contact EVERYONE and demand that Grijalva be sworn into allow her to represent her constituents.
OK, so if the Speaker of the House refuses to swear in a new representative, the House can authorize another individual to administer the oath. On rare occasions, this has included another House member or a judge.
The process for swearing in new representatives
On the first day of a new Congress, the Speaker-elect is sworn in by the Dean of the House (the longest-serving member).
The Speaker then administers the oath to all other members, including delegates and the resident commissioner, at once.
Members elected in special elections or those absent on the first day can be sworn in at a later date.
Options if the Speaker refuses to act
Designated Representative: The House can pass a resolution to allow another person to administer the oath. This has occurred when a member was absent due to illness.
Court challenge: Some legal experts argue that a newly elected member could be sworn in by a notary public and then legally challenge the delay. The Supreme Court has previously ruled that Congress cannot exclude a duly elected representative who meets the constitutional requirements for holding office.
No other business can occur: Since the oath is required by the Constitution, a representative who has not been sworn in cannot legally perform their duties. The House cannot move forward with legislative business until its members are sworn in.

Seems like they’ll just manufacture whatever evidence they think they need in order to lock anyone up. 🙄

Right you are. Thank you for correcting me. They are on cable, aren’t they? I suppose the only real power would be in boycotting their advertisers in that case.

I may disagree with you about the First Amendment part. Some of what I have heard really does sound like a call for violence.

Write letters to the editor of your local newspapers about this! That is one easy thing we can all do.
