A snippet from my letter:

"Burr’s tireless commitment to the release and dissemination of archival material, particularly records related to US nuclear history, has made it possible for scholars to delve into a variety of topics and supported a generation of researchers working in the field."

When Richard and David Painter nominated Bill for the Nelson Prize, they asked me to write a letter of support. Many at @shafrhistorians.bsky.social knew Bill far better than I did. The fact that I still had so much to say is testament to Bill's reach and impact on the field.

Oh, of course — just a reminder how bizarre that requirement is. In what universe does JMU make more sense than Texas or Miami in the playoff?

Above all, my thinking is almost certainly coloured by where and how Canada has fit in the Western Hemisphere as envisioned by previous generations of US policymakers.

Of course, it's entirely possible history is a poor guide in this instance!

Makes sense. I saw much of that overlapping with portions of the priorities for Europe, e.g. "taking primary responsibility for its own defense, without being dominated by any adversarial power."
