Reminder that the recently released Wyant report into the #CorruptCare scandal was extremely limited in scope. Why did the Alberta government stop tracking class sizes in 2019? For pretty much the same reason that thieves kill the cameras before a heist: they didn't want anyone to see what they were doing.Key excerpts from the article:Alberta used to publish class size data annually, detailing the number of students in every class at more than 1,500 schools across the province.In 2019, the newly elected UCP government put an end to that practice.When we compare these two figures, we can see that teaching staff and student enrolment tended to track pretty close to one another until about 2021.From that point on, a gap emerges, with enrolment growth outpacing growth in teaching staff.While Alberta cancelled its detailed class-size reporting in 2019, Edmonton Public Schools still tracks this data, which suggests class sizes in many schools remain much larger than the recommendations in that 22-year-old report.Hunter, with the University of Alberta, said it would be “immensely helpful” to have the type of detailed class size data that the province used to gather and publish annually.“It might cause a bit of angst to put some of the stuff out in the public domain but, hey, we do live in a democracy,” he said.“Student-teacher ratio is a key performance indicator for any system … and people want to know what these numbers are.”

Hey teachers, if you're anxious about Thanksgiving weekend conversations with people who think that Alberta's classrooms are just fine, this video might help.One note that i didn't include in the video - in an effort to not go full "math teacher" on this - but part of the problem with the 'Berta Dad is that he uses the average even though sometimes averages aren't the best measure of central tendency. For example, if you google it you’ll see that the average income in NYC is about $128/year. But … NYC is home to about 123 billionaires, and they really tend to skew the average up. So in a case like that we don’t use the average, because the average doesn’t reflect reality. We use the median, or middle number, which is about $80/year … almost $50K less than the average.Some of that same thing happens with Alberta's class sizes: the average doesn't reflect reality very well at all.I hope that makes sense and I hope the video is helpful, even though it's too long.
