If you're interested in coaching, skill development, combat sports, or ecological psychology, this paper offers a fresh lens on skill learning in combat sports 🥊—and how coaches shape learning through embodied, strategic, and affective interaction. 🙌

Notably, coaching input often correlated with immediate performance gains 📈:

The key insight💡: Skilled, dynamic coaching during live competition significantly boosts a learner's performance 🗣️➡️🤺. It’s not just what you teach—it’s when and how you coach that makes the difference.

To remedy this, we developed a microethnographic study. We closely studied🔎coach-athlete interactions at live combat sports events.This gave us insight into how performance changed over rounds as a consequence of specific coaching prompts👋and advice 🗯️

Thread by lead author Sara Kim Hjortborg: recent studies raise concerns about individualistic or exclusively laboratory-based approaches🧑‍🔬 to skill research. But field-based methods that are able to hold greater levels of complexity🧮have not been thoroughly introduced nor accepted into sports science
