I've read a few Supreme Court opinions that also did not seem to realize this.

This is spot on. There has never been a Plan B because NATO’s primacy was key to its credibility. But now it’s not credible, so it’s time to mimic as much as possible in the EU structure. Figure out what the US is no longer bringing and build that capacity first.
Some thoughts from Brussels. Europe is awoken and believes America is all but gone. As such huge efforts on defense funding from EU, Germany, and others. This is real. BUT...
