On the back of a recent wave of AI shilling for use in "education", here's my second, tangential essay in the "I call bullshit" series: On not screwing over learners in my writing classroom by pretending generative AI will do them more good than harm.

Today, I learned, to my great pleasure (and slight alarm) that when we first moved to Canada, for 2-3 years, we lived next door to Canada's foremost Indigenous children's rights advocate, Cindy Blackstock.

She even gave us her patio chairs. We still have them!

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

Great panel with @rainewilson.bsky.social, @suyidavies.com and Marko Hautala, moderated by @laurenwrites.bsky.social: Dark Fantasy vs Horror.

No fighting yet, but excellent discussion on another @britfantasysoc.bsky.social online day 🙌

The daily fluctuation of temp & the elements is the one thing I might never fully adjust to moving north of the equator. I spent 25 years only ever having to plan for rain! Now, every October is a One Day, Four Seasons challenge.

Anyway, read the whole (excellent) thread, but particularly this post.

What I know from being Black my whole life, and poor for the majority of it, is that politely ignoring a root issue to attend to one closer to the surface is like robbing Peter to pay Paul. It’s a band-aid on a gaping wound, and it will not hold your flesh together for long. The US needs stitches.

I am constantly re-learning what it meants to be human in this world, not because I'm a good writer, but because being a writer who wants to honestly represent the spectrum of humanity in literature forces me to reckon with, and be curious about, the world--and myself--in an honest manner.

I say it all the time, but imma say it again: a lot of very book smart people lack the emotional education and communication skills that would allow them to generate the courage they want to embody in their work. They are incurious about their own emotional lives, and consequently, those of others.

Attn: Children of the dark! Join me and @britfantasysoc.bsky.social as we kick off spooky season in style and spend Saturday (yes, this weekend) talking about MONSTERS. How do you make a compelling monster? How do you create tension and fear? And is it horror or is it actually dark fantasy?

🧵⬇️
A dark purple background with lime green writing pronounces there's "spooky vibes only" at the next British Fantasy Society online event day, all about 'something monstrous'. There are black outlines of haunted houses and churches, creepy-looking trees, bats, and spiderwebs, too. I'm learning, slowly, that one way to survive the noise when creating is your work, is to set aside time for creating that is not your work.

Creative practice--defined as you please--that sits in the quiet, that refills the well, that holds itself to little else but you, is crucial.

"Track is like credit: it might be better to have none at all."

I need this statement tattooed to my forehead because this the closest thing to the damn truth about how perceived "bad" sales--much of which have absolutely nothing to do with your own authorial efforts--follow you forever.

I see a lot of artists on here questioning whether they should be promoting their work in the current political climate.

The answer is always yes. ART: books, music, film, painting, sculpture - all of it - is the most accessible way to communicate complex topics, ideologies and emotions.

Or, as a character, Satti, says in The Nameless Republic trilogy:

"Peace is not the absence of war. It is the presence of violence so loud it is common, so common it silences, so silent it is soundless."
