I was working for an aid NGO Brazil in the 1970s when the ‘Transamazonica’, the trans Amazon highway, was being built. Every time I flew over the area the deforestation had grown, from the road outwards - like ribs from a central backbone, exposing the barren land like bare flesh. It was a disaster.
