this is the big thing that's lost as we move to smaller trust-based communities (Discords, private mailing lists, groupchats, the like). if you are on the outside they are difficult to enter. even to be able to pick up on the dynamics from the outside is important.
“social media fundamentally bad” is an elitist take. twitter allowed people who were *outside* closed-off social circles to get *inside* on the strength of their writing, ideas, vibe
i understand why people lament some of the recurring dynamics but to scrap it entirely is a huge regression
