I’m in C directly accessing the frame buffer with pd->graphics->getFrame(). Iterating over each row top to bottom. If it’s even, shift N bits to the right, odd the to the left. Shift amount is driven via a sin function mapped to Y. Can then modulate the period/amplitude to get a more intense effect.
