The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the trade body for the UK motor industry, has issued a sharp rebuke against proposals for a 'pay per mile' tax on electric vehicles (EVs), warning the measure would be "entirely the wrong measure at the wrong time. "In a statement released today, an SMMT spokesperson condemned the potential tax regime, arguing that introducing a complex and costly system targeting the very vehicles the industry is mandated to sell would severely hinder the UK's transition to zero-emission mobility. "We recognise the need for a new approach to motoring taxes but at such a pivotal moment in the UK’s EV transition, this would be entirely the wrong measure at the wrong time," an SMMT spokesperson stated.
