Replacing components on ceramic substrate is a pain in the butt, cannot recommend.

DIY project I’m currently working on. It’s an isolated variac power supply with AC and DC output. Added a gearmotor to the variac cuz turning it by hand would be waaaay too primitive. Just need to finish wiring it. The control unit goes on my workbench, the transformer enclosure goes underneath.

This came out of an old Allen Bradley HMI thingamabob. I know this is some specialized piece of kit but could they make the layout any less intuitive?

We have a Trane furnace in our house. This is what the filter looks like after it’s been in service for a while. It gets sucked against the blower housing which blocks airflow, rendering a significant amount of the filter’s area useless. Is it just me or is that stupid design?

The company I work for has these custom made fuse testers. It’s literally nothing more than a fancy continuity tester. These things are needlessly over-engineered, I absolutely love it!

Nothing wrong with that, right?

How did this even happen?

A while back I found some orange stuff inside this chunk of aluminum. Anyone know what that that could be?

Blown electrolytic caps are nothing new but I haven’t seen this level of destruction before. They are 1000uF @ 400V each, pulled from a VFD.

Today in the drive repair shop: VFD with carbon tracking underneath the terminal block (likely caused be fluid ingress). A path was created between HV+ (DC bus) to ground.

Great idea, let’s glue electrolytic caps to heat producing devices. This is the low-voltage power supply inside a variable frequency drive, a pricey piece of industrial equipment that came in for repair. There’s so much space on that PCB and yet, this…

I brought this fine specimen home in April, no clue if it works. Haven’t even looked inside the thing yet. Might make for a fun winter project, it would be nice to have an analog scope in the lab again…
