@gavinbroad.bsky.social Hi Gavin, is it possible to ID this insect? This photo is all I have of it. North Cornwall today.

Luckily I took a sample home and turns out this is Amaranthus hybridus (Green Amaranth).

This seems to be a female Ichneumon extensorius wasp that I found in my back garden today in Wadebridge. There's only 1 prior record for it in Cornwall from 1906, so any knowledgable insect person's input would be most welcome.

In a field of Sunflowers, I found a solitary Thorn Apple in fruit, again, a likely seed contaminant when the sunflowers were sown. St. Endellion, Cornwall today.

Common Amaranth (I think) in an arable field, no doubt a seed contaminant when the crop of Maize was planted. St. Endellion Cornwall today.

I found some flowering this week too in Cornwall. It was a young plant that had been mowed which no doubt forced it into flower.

There's actually a train that goes from Edinburgh to Penzance, so you could see both venues in a couple of days.

I've only found a few species here in Cornwall, despite extensive searching, with the Hayle estuary and parts of the River Camel the hotspots. Most estuaries here have tons of S. europaea and nothing else.
