Jan 2026 - I know I will be absolutely miserable in 6-8 months but winter in Panhandle Florida is perfect and I easily forget the brutality of our long humid summers.
Along the FL/GA border and Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve. Millions flower in 2-3 weeks and 100s of visitors come to see.
Here’s a Daddy Longlegs hiding on a very mossy Florida Maple while we reflag the Trillium Creek Trail.

1st Common Blue Violet of the year. Viola sororia - native and 1 of several Viola species I’ll see thru early spring as I explore my home county, Gadsden in eastern FL Panhandle

Sure looks like Agalinis seeds but can’t tell which 1 of 2 species. A wet spot as water had puddled between the Longleaf Pine beds.

Yaupon holly that does fine with prescribed burns given the persistent roots. This survived mechanical bedding by previous owner as they put in Longleaf. I cut a nasty 8’ Sand pine that was hiding the berries. Only a 1000 more Sandies to eradicate ..

And after photo of Steephead, I look down and there is a lovely Lady Lupine doing quite well on these freezing winter days. Not that it has gone below 27° here west of Tallahassee…
