The plan was for each monster to have a unique conversation tree to learn their skill.

This added a lot of scope to the game without really adding much, so I decided to scrap it and simply have Claire learn spells by defeating monsters instead.

For a very long time (since the original Game Maker prototypes from like 10 years ago) the main character was going to learn new spells through an SMT style negotiation system.

I went through a lot of trial and error to try and make the headshots feel satisfying. They're much much snappier now but for a while they had a lot of slow-mo lol

I even prototyped it with a Persona-style cutin but it was just too much haha

Piper was originally going to have a sort of "karma" system built into his spell casting where his magic power would increase when he used healing spells and reset when he used damaging spells. I think his current mechanics are more interesting though!

Claire had another intermediate design where I tried to give her more of a bounty hunter vibe but I think it just wasn't focused enough.

Piper is mostly the same but with some different props and grey fur.

I decided after that point to completely switch to 3D models because I'm much more comfortable making them than sprites.

Claire had a different design here. I think her outfit is supposed to be a mix of Motoko Kusanagi and Misato from Eva.

In this concept; the bosses were going to be 3D models though to make them more imposing looking (I don't know why I thought the painted textures wouldn't clash with the sprites thought????)

Found some old gifs of my game that I figured I'd share in case I ever loose them.

This is the first prototype I made in Godot, dated 22/12/2023.

Originally the game was supposed to have sprites in 3D like Breath of Fire 3 but I realized pretty quick I wasn't good enough at drawing them.

Since there's a big influx of new bsky users I should probably re-introduce my game!

This is my #indierpg inspired by PS2 classics and some modern stuff too. It has a focus on characters with unique functions. I am making it in the #godotengine. Hope you think it's neat!

Slime channel form in game, plus an updated look at how things are coming along.

When Monster-type enemies are defeated Claire absorbs their essence in the form of skills :D

In this example, killing a Slime drains some charges of the Sticky Punch skill.

Working on a new Channel form for Claire; Slime themed for poison skills.

I've done a bunch of UI work lately as well but I'd like to wait til I've done a bit more of the art for it just cause it's not super pretty right now, even though it's important and functional :)

I played UNDERTALE just under a month after it came out, and I don't think I'd look at games the same way if I hadn't. There's something raw and unpolished about it that makes it so charming; it's perfect in all it's imperfections. I don't think my own game would be the same without it. Thanks Toby.

Actually screw it here's an example.

All this is is a short tween on the camera's fov with the transition set to Elastic and it looks as good as any solution I could come up with lol
