Really depends on the context and size of the numbers. I usually default to health bars (slider?) but generally the health pools I encounter are somewhere in the hundreds or thousands so its a bit easier to visualize.

Of the jams that I participated in it always felt like the idea was a way for Devs to just get out of their head and find ways to work past analysis paralysis. At least that was my experience.

I've actually specifically dropped the audio in my game to start at like 30% because of this. Why do other devs think we leave the computer audio at like 2?

Honestly them mixing the dark souls drop money on death mechanic to a Metroidvania I think is just a bad game design call. It's like you're simultaneously encouraging exploration while punishing being unfamiliar with said explored new environment at the same time.
