Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can.
The letter that 23 state AG’s sent to USDA on Friday asked for a response by EOD today, so I’d expect them to file suit tonight or tomorrow at the latest:

The one part that’s been confusing me is the bruising on the hand. Why not a PICC? Or surely you can put a little portable ultrasound in the residence and use it to start IV’s in the AC. Hand just seems weird to me, especially for someone that age.

Deleted my other comment bc you’re right, I don’t know how representative my own sample is, & there are reasons to think I’m seeing (& remembering) people on the more precarious end of things.

I’m getting the feeling that a lot of people think that SNAP covers most/all of the monthly food bill, when the reality is very often ”SNAP covers some, you scramble & scrape to cover some, & you skip meals & go hungry especially toward the end of the month.”

Not the point obvs, but I’m looking at his reply here, and. Does he think Matt Darling somehow missed the beginning of the pandemic? Does he think Darling lost all his own memory of the pandemic and needs to be assured of what it was like?

…it also is a real limit on how *practically* useful they are, at least for how they’re perceived and expected to be useful if that makes sense?

This is both what I find genuinely interesting about LLMs and frustrating. I was reading your emoji experiments earlier, and I feel like that’s adjacent to this? How they arrive at using language in a way that mirrors us, and what they’re doing when they don’t, is genuinely fascinating! But…

This is great! For some reason the very earnest description of Bosc pears’ aesthetic advantages is both sending me and making me demand only rounder, squatter fruit for *my* crisps - no swanlike fruit for me, give me ugly duckling fruit only.

I’ve definitely gotten the impression this would’ve usually been an “aw crap” kind of thing that’s now…not that. Hard agree on closing the 5; I don’t know anything about artillery, but I do know SoCal drivers.

Weird, the instructor said the shrapnel didn’t look like they expected either, something about how it wasn’t little squares?

No, totally, that’s why I found the QT interesting - the way I read what the instructor said, they think it *was* more likely equipment-related. Like, they say it was nobody’s fault and they’ve had 15-20 shells pre-detonate themselves.

From someone who asked an artillery instructor friend-of-a-friend (don’t know which branch), they mention a shell-fuse combo?

Thanks for this! Interesting re: shell-fuse combo instructor mentions. I feel badly for the Marines though.

CHP has a press release out on its website w/ photo (link in next reply), can’t tell scale but I wouldn’t describe this as little square-shaped:

3. Pitchers are valuable and breakable. You want them to spend their training time on pitching, not split their focus between pitching and batting. You want a good pitcher, not an okay-ish two-way player. And you REALLY don’t want them overdoing it and ending up with a career-ending injury.
October 18, 2025 at 8:43 AM
2. If you mean good offensive + defensive player, baseball totally has those, but they’re position players. Pitcher is a specialized defensive position; unlike position players, pitchers never HAVE to be at bat. You don’t need them to be good batters, and there are reasons not to want them to try.
October 18, 2025 at 8:43 AM
3 things:

1. Yes, the concept exists. How common it is depends on how you map all rounder over onto baseball. If you’re asking specifically about pitcher/batters (what we call two-way players), this used to be more of a thing (Babe Ruth was one) but has disappeared. Ohtani’s the first in decades.

I thought this too, but looking at the other photos in the replies, I think she’s resting her foot on what might be a cannonball but looks distressingly like an extra large disembodied boob.

This is pretty interesting! I didn‘t think paranormal experiences were in the Presbyterian wheelhouse? I don’t know many (any?) Presbyterians, but lots of my coworkers & friends are Catholic, & they tend to take that kind of thing very seriously.

I’ve done this as a joke (BBC Sports commentary over the Super Bowl).

I don’t know if this is still true, but it used to be that HHS & HUD defined homelessness differently; for example, someone couch-surfing was homeless per HHS but NOT homeless per HUD. So you could end with wildly different counts depending on who was doing the counting.
September 22, 2025 at 5:12 AM
HHS (& DoEd) homelessness categories are something like shelter, street (incl. living in car), doubled up (like couch surfing), transitional housing, & permanent supportive housing. But they use the term “homeless,” not “unhoused” or “houseless.”
