We did collect 7 of 8 of those markers but we made sure each person only collected one.
The first tech bought in the game was moving rovers further and it ended up at +6 by the second colony level, so it was pretty easy to pick up pretty much anything.

My kids and my Sister in Law commented that us playing this sounded like a group of adults having a slightly heated debate and not folks having fun.

Interestingly the winner didn't really do anything to advance the colony. I was not expecting build habitats and collect all the workers to be a valid win strategy.

This was our first play, not even considering an expansion at this point.
