Just noticed that Nichibunken's open access collection has a full text OA copy of book "Gender and Modernity: Rereading Japanese Women's Magazines" (152MB) nichibun.repo.nii.ac.jp/records/6419 - individual chapters can also be downloaded. Guess I don't need to wait for that inter-library loan.

Time filies. I felt the oppsoite twenty plus years ago and encouraged myself to go broad beyond the border. I couldn't even imagine a discourse like this would emerge. That's why I find the country and its history interesting!

For those who read Japanese and have ever rolled their eyes at one of the innumerable TV shows where a foreigner is used to tell Japanese people how sugoi!! Nippon is, I wholeheartedly recommend this cathartic book by @hayakawa2601.bsky.social . It's not only incisive but often laugh-out-loud funny.

I greeted two professors at AHA before, one of whom introduced me to Dr. Boyle. If you don't know anyone there yet intend to apply for the program, you send a message to [email protected]. I believe they can forward it to the researcher you want to work with. Hope this helps!

I share the news because it is part of Nichibunken's funded visiting program for Japan specialists outside Japan. If you want to apply for a yearlong research stay there at some point from April 2027 to January 2029, the deadline for the applications is October 31, 2025.

I'm pleased to share that I will stay as a visiting scholar in Nichibunken/日文研 during the calendar year of 2027. I will join the research group, "Island Japan," led by Prof. Ted Boyle and work on my project on mobilities between Japan and Cold War Asia.
