This chair was aggravating. Felt like with each stroke I
noticed a mistake. A leg was always too short or too long.

I did add a shadow, but clearly not enough. It’s not supposed to look like it’s levitating.

Painting is hard. Still having a good time, though.

I was proud with my colors on this one until I saw the yellow on the front facing side was so bright when I took a picture of it.

A thing I’d like to improve upon is wasting paint. After each painting I have so much left over.

I’ve sketched out my last two paintings with pencil and I think it’s now part of my process. It’s helped a lot with their centering and the structure.

I’m in the final chapter of the book I’ve been working from, which deals with rendering. I’m excited to work through this chapter and I’m happy with how this one turned out.

This was supposed to be an abstract landscape that was just shapes in the book I’m using, but I just kept messing with it.

What I learned from this is there is a time I should stop. I had a nice red, orange, yellow gradient in the sky, but I kept adding more until I ruined it.

When I was a child my uncle had a row of birch trees along his driveway. I used to love peeling the white bark off them to the point where I remember running out of bark my chubby little hands could reach on multiple occasions. What an absolute little monster I was.

I’ve been ill and haven’t been able to paint for the past few days. It was nice to get back to it.

I learned from this one it’s important to keep my brushes clean. I had paint built up in my brush it and before I realized where it was coming from it had tainted everything. I tried to clean it off the canvas but that went horribly. I tried to cover it up with a ton of paint, but…

I definitely botched the stream trying place the blue over burnt sienna. Maybe when it dries I might try to fix it. I also struggle with mixing greens. I can never seem mix enough yellow in to get a lighter green and when I do there’s a huge pile of excess paint.

This is the first painting I’ve completed that I like to look at. I think I’m making a little progress.

This one was frustrating. The book I’m learning from said it was supposed to be a study of a simple background and foreground, but I tried to do add a little more and ended up with this. I have no idea what I’m doing.

I really enjoyed painting this. It got kind of muddy when I added in the pure ivory black, but it still was a good time.

Art for my new DND character.

I’m excited to play a headless paladin in Curse of Strahd.

I neglected trying to improve my skills last month. This month my goal is to try to finish the Draw-A-Boxes texture challenge and to gesture or figure draw each day.

I tried to replicate Irving’s painting from Severance but… I had no idea what I was doing.

Trying to use palette knives to paint with was way harder than I thought it would be. When I tried to lay in the blue and white things got weird.

From this one I learned I need to take better care of my brushes. I’ve only had this set of brushes for a month and my round brushes are no longer round and a third of them are in two pieces. I purchased some nicer replacement brushes. I hope they hold up better than my cheap set.

The book said to use expressive strokes and to not bother laying out the painting. I think I did that and about half the painting is missing. There’s supposed to be a whole vase and table. Oops.

Oil Painting #17

I’m learning from a book that I had laying around the house from when my sister wanted to learn how to paint with acrylics. The purpose of the exercise was to show how you can layer colors on top of each other.

I tried that and then stoped. It’d take so long to dry.

Really lost the plot on this one. It was a complete mess. I tried to paint over tree but the layer of paint was too thick. I probably, should have just let it sit and dry for awhile, but decided to push through and it got real gross and the tree got too thick.
