TIL that 24 counts as "later in life" guess we're all just fucking dinosaurs.

The photo you use of her with JMLP is cut, there's a third person on it, Pierre Lagaillarde, co-founder of the OAS, a far right terrorist group whose main goal was to keep Algeria as a french colony

The biggest change was in how it's presented to newcomers thanks to an extreme memeification of the french dub of the chips scene, but for most people I've talked to it's a mix of hilarity and genuine love for the scene.

Thankfully in my circles bascially the opinion didn't change that much since it concluded (basically "an awesome first part with a strong but lesser second part")

Death note apologia ? I mean does it need any "apologia" ? It's still one of the most positively seen early-mid 00s manga AFAIK.

And I mean it's an amazing manga with a rather good anime adaptation!

At the very least this led to the interesting sci-fi story "I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter"

This line of thinking is flawed anyways, I'm sure if you listed what are the 10 most culturally significant works in your opinion, they wouldn't all pass this test, even big names.

I mean, keeping with this annecdotical standard, star trek wouldn't pass this test AFAIK.

There actually was one such book released alongside the first movie but it got heavily retconned IIRC
December 27, 2025 at 10:45 PM
I mean I've come across plenty of avatar comics and toysets when browsing stores, came across plenty of kids talking about avatar.
It's annecdotical but so is the basis you put here.

The king of Elfland's daughter album by Johnson and Knight sure doesn't sound like something a lot of folks know of, but you'd be hard pressed to say this book has no cultural impact
December 27, 2025 at 10:34 PM
Though to be honnest most of these paratexts for stuff considered "culturally relevant" are also absolutely insignificant.

Like... Is the back to the future cartoon significant ? What about the Mad Max comics and games ?

Oh yeah my bad
December 27, 2025 at 10:25 PM
That's the weirdest thing I'm seeing with people saying Avatar had no cultural impact: people saying that it has no fandom.

Avatar do have a fandom, a rather active one at that, but they just do their thing and keep to their own, so people just assume they don't exist
December 27, 2025 at 10:24 PM
I mean, how many people actually read the star wars novels ? Especially the pre Disney buyout ones ? (Based on people that say that the old EU was amazing, I'd wager not as many as they'd like us to believe)
December 27, 2025 at 10:20 PM
Comics, toy sets, video games, theme parks, stage plays, literal scientific books...

Novels were planned and weren't officially cancelled but yeah that wouldn't count, even if it was the first thing planned.

And to say that fan creations don't exist I can o'ly guess that you didn't look it up.
December 27, 2025 at 10:17 PM
And to be fair, I think the first two movies would have been better as mockumentaries about Pandora, the world *is* the main character in both of those
December 27, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Besides, I mentioned the fan community because that's basically the thing that answered to all of the previous commenter's remarks
December 27, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Then you'd have to tell me what you consider as "having an impact on culture", because if something that

1. Impact how movies are made
2. Is regularly talked about
3. As its own subculture(s)

Have zero impact on culture, I don't know what would qualify as impacting culture
December 27, 2025 at 5:46 PM
I'm not a fan of Avatar, but I can guarantee you that the answer to all of these is "yes".

Avatar has a rather lively fan community, they're just generally just minding their own business
