Marine Mammal Research Project (MMRP) recently published on the body condition and growth of Hawaiian calves in Alaska: these cherubs will multiply in weight 12 times over and double in length during their first year!

Maui’s shallows were laden with younglings of mercurial gray. Today’s survey of the Hawaiian calving grounds revealed a dozen calves, several of whom were possessed with aerial finesse. 2.05.25 🫧

A humpback whale measuring 14.8 meters long will use 10.3 megajoules, or over 300 kilowatts, for a complete breach, equivalent to a 60kg runner completing a marathon.
