Obviously there's a lot more to say, and word count is restricted, but I don't think Shadow of the Erdtree is a good way to transition into DLC potentially being GOTY contenders. Something like Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk may have had a stronger argument for it. The timing and choice are just off.

It's a really complicated question and now that pandoras box is open so to speak, it's impossible to now put it back. Elden Ring's particular problem is that is not remotely standalone, and I would argue doesn't really make any significant changes to what you get from the base game.
