You can support the BCN by making a donation or buying some limited edition tote bags! Our partners will be accepting donations for these at partner cemeteries but you can head to talkdeath.com/merch to get your own if you won't be attending at a partner cem!

By working in partnership with people and organizations actively engaged in protecting the legacy of Black cemeteries in their communities, the BCN is helping to ensure that stories told on their platform may be shared for years to come.

"These are powerful ways to fight loneliness, build community locally, and strengthen pillars of healthy towns – while increasing the possibility of local morbidly curious connections."

"Silent Book Club of Death is a place where you can come and discuss these matters with peers, and know that you’ll be met with understanding... The more of these discussions we are able to have and normalize the topic, the more people will leave Book Club and have these discussions elsewhere.”

"Reading can be a way to enter a meditative state and confront feelings that might be too distressing to reflect on otherwise. It can often feel like a solo endeavor, but can be a powerful way to connect with the like minded to discuss topics you might not be able to otherwise."

“Dance of Autumn," circa 1917. Painted by Piotr Stachiewicz (1858–1938). What does this make you think of?

Language that inflames stigma makes it challenging for folks to seek and receive support

Language matters and in terms of support around suicide so does:
access to healthcare
-housing
-autonomy
-access to food
-social structures
-care
-respect
talkdeath.bsky.social
The way we talk about suicide impacts its perception and treatment

‘Died by suicide’ removes some of the blame and shame that can be found in ‘committed’

September is suicide awareness month. We wanted to take a moment to share why we say ‘died by suicide.’

There is a lot of stigma around suicide

Using neutral language helps with navigating important and necessary conversations

We are honored to share our latest article by guest writer, Maya Williams. “The Importance of Black Feminine Beautification Rituals for Funerals in American Religion”
talkdeath.bsky.social
"Until our American society stops attempting to absolve itself of its ongoing crimes and erasure of humanity towards Black women, fems, and more that contributes to their unrighteous deaths, they ought to have the right to all the beautification rituals they please"
talkdeath.bsky.social
"So for Black women to develop beautification rituals and traditions in their funeral services is a long awaited reclamation of ‘the good death.’ It is a long awaited reclamation within the conversation and display of American religion as well."
talkdeath.bsky.social
"It would also be ridiculous to say nothing of the other forms of intersectional discrimination faced by Black trans women along with Black cis women."
talkdeath.bsky.social
"Black women’s bodies have been poked, prodded, used for non-consensual scientific research, used for non-consensual sexual activities, and have experienced higher rates of infant mortality."
