As part of @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social ng.bsky.social, I wrote an op-ed in my local paper about how cuts to federal funding put the present and future health of our communities at enormous risk.

My undergrads think the Diener Mid-Career Award is hilarious because to them it sounds like it’s for having a “mid” career 🫠

Managing emotions is not easy - we often get by with a little help. In the NEW Social Interaction and Emotion Lab at Rutgers-Newark, we’ll study how social interactions regulate emotion using experiments, naturalistic data, and multi-modal approaches. ✨ Now recruiting! ✨🙌 Learn more: raziasahi.com

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

We’re recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join our team! 🎉

I’m happy to share that I’ve opened back up the search for this position (it was temporarily closed due to funding uncertainty).

See lab page and doc below for details!

Honored to contribute a Journal Club piece to @natrevpsychol.nature.com!

I explore Robert White's seminal "competence motivation" framework (1959) and why it remains relevant over 60 years later—from why toddlers insist on doing things themselves to designing intrinsically motivated AI. 🤖

Wait -- last thing! emotions might be an extra weird abstract category because they are more easily embodied (in my opinion) than something like a philosophical category/rules/morals...
talvaldivia.bsky.social
Though, I'm not sure that the same *couldn't* be said for lots of other abstract concepts. As abstractness pertains to fluency tasks, # of valid words produced are def lower compared to concrete categories, and coding the words produced is extremely difficult given the abstract-ness of it all...
talvaldivia.bsky.social
I brainstormed this question with my lab and we came to the conclusion that emotion words are a particularly difficult/abstract concept because i) affective scientists haven't come to consensus on what is/isn't an emotion word, and ii) the line between what is/isn't an emotion varies across culture

Does anyone know of any studies/experiments using abstract words as cues in verbal fluency? e.g., name as many 'scientific principles' as you can in 60s? (e.g., emotions, philosophical concepts, rules, conventions, etc)
talvaldivia.bsky.social
We did!! For the emotion fluency paper. There are at least 3 papers that I know used emotion fluency (the way we defined it, I can include below in threads). There's mine: psycnet.apa.org/record/2025-...
