Octavia E. Butler signed this copy of Parable of the Sower for my late mother, Patricia Stephens Due.

The power of these Black women inspired me to write an essay after Tr*mp's inauguration in 2017. I've reposted a slightly revised version I hope will bring you hope today.

Surviving President Tr*mp: Lessons from the 1960s and Octavia E. Butler
I originally wrote this essay to coincide with the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2017. It deeply grieves me to publish it…

I gave my heart and soul to that place. Built entire sections for journalists pushed out of their home countries.

When the writer I hired, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi Arabia, they paraded me around as a symbol for press freedom.

I put MY LIFE on the line to defend journalism and WaPo.

weird that neither of these articles two main stories decrying censorship mention WaPo's firing of @karenattiah.bsky.social I guess democracy really does die in darkness

If you are going to pick up a book this fall make it @tananarivedue.bsky.social “The Reformatory”. Incredibly written. Draws you in with raw and gut wrenching storytelling that reminds us all of the strength in telling our stories — not just for us but for all of those whose voices were silenced.

This week's Friday review on AKGnetmouse.substack.com will be of Freedom in the Family, by @tananarivedue.bsky.social and her mother, Civil Rights activist Patricia Stephens Due.

I cherish my copy, which Tananarive kindly signed at Detcon1 in 2014.
The front cover of Freedom In The Family: A Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights, by Tananarive Due and Patricia Stephens Due. (One World, 2003)

The cover illustration is a B&W photo of Patricia Stephens Due, in dark sunglasses, leading a line of other young black women along a sidewalk, heads held high. Title Page inside this copy of Freedom in the Family. It is inscribed, "To Anne -- The Dream Lives! The struggle continues." signed Tananarive Due in the middle, and Patricia Due along the bottom edge. In the top right corner, it says, "7/18/14 Detcon1"

The right side and bottom of the book are edged with several yellow post-its, marking pages of interest.

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

I was lucky enough to attend a screening and it was a wild ride! So fun and imaginative.

Everytime someone tells me something like “I’m proud you stand up for what you believe in…”

I always think to myself —

My ancestors survived the genocide of the Spanish conquest, the slave trade, the invasion of the U.S., theft of their land, more.

They survived all that, I can survive words.

My @copperdogbooks.bsky.social haul. I was so excited to not only snag the last copy of Moonflow by @bitterkarella.bsky.social but to also find a signed copy of one of my favorite @tananarivedue.bsky.social books!
