🧵

1. Ok I promised to post about what we can do to counter this terrible moment in US History and how to set about getting through the next 4+ years.

So permit me an extended turtle metaphor.

One day, near my house in Rock Hill, a “protected” forested green space was about to be razed to make…
A frowing native box turtle named Strange Peter. He lives on a hill, as a wild turtle, in the hardwood forest of our farm where he was born. He has a name because we see him often enough to say hello, not because he is a domestic turtle.

He’s not the turtle from the story, but is the same species as the ones we were looking for.

He’s is quite pretty.

Yes. I think they feel our only hope is to get to the Midterms with the ability to win a free and fair election still there.

Looking back, what constituents should have done in November is gotten, on video, members of the GOP answering the question, “What will be the line for you?” with specific prompts, going down the list of what comprises authoritarianism.

Then played it back with each crossed line.

Yes. There’s the rub. Should he be talking less and doing more, such as commanding LEOs in his state to counter illegal ICE activities.

Does he have the authority to say, “you’re fired if you help the feds?”

I think Trump is hoping for armed-man vs armed man action so he can Insurrection Act.

I posted this once, took it down due to a typo, and before I could post it again, I got a call from someone saying he should be President.

Not the right time *at all* to be thinking about that stuff.

But I get it.

Pritzker: "He said he was going after the worst of the worst. It's not going after the worst of the worst when you're just literally stopping children who happen to be brown & asking them for papers as if they're gonna have proof they're a citizen. Pull out your phones and film everything you see"

This seems like a historic quote and a historic moment.

I’m liking him more and more.

Pritzker: "This guy is unhinged. He's insecure. He's a wannabe dictator. And there's one thing I really want to say to Donald Trump. If you come for my people, you come through me. So come and get me."

Ok, @nbcnews.com, now YOUR job is to cover it like everything depend on your coverage.

Run scenarios. Treat it like an approaching hurricane. How should families prepare? What should the response from the international community be?

Don’t minimize. Don’t look out only for yourselves.

I suppose there’s a small chance it’s not too late for this.

Have not seen the calls for violence.

But you are right about bots targeting Blue voters as well as red.

In the months running up to the 2024 election, this place was a cesspit of influence campaigns pushing the “GenocideJoe” hashtag and real people getting pulled in.

This is a professor at Rutgers who teaches a class on the history of anti-fascism. He also teaches about human rights. He has received multiple death threats and been doxed. He is relocating to Europe for his safety. This is where we are in the US now. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.

That does sound good.

We did Charleston with him when he was smaller, but we need to do it again.

I think I’m going to do Civil War history as a cohesive study when he is a little older.

We’re in a quandary.

Saturday, the local living history museum is having a special event with the county historian covering the Revolutionary War here.

Also, in Columbia, the SC Archeological Society is having their annual public dig with “bring your artifact to ID” etc.

Kid wants to do both.
tangentsafari.bsky.social
😂 I wish.

In SC right now.

6. And also, while no segment of the Democratic Party ecosystem should be immune from criticism, some parts are doing better/worse than others.

…that, “Democrats are the REAL problem!” for decades, so it is a matter of faith to many.

4. Privileged people are trained to call the manager when unhappy. They don’t want to think about fixing any wobbly cafe tables themselves.

5. Foreign influence campaigns amplify anti-Democrat messaging.

1. People are not self-reflective about how they are in partially self-constructed information bubble and reading news is too difficult for them anymore.

2. They get engagement from en-ragement ,which trainer them to lean into those points.

3. Certain left leaning circles have promoted the idea…

I don’t know what big accounts get out of saying shit like this. “If I were in charge of the democrats I would say Donald Trump is bad in these ways that they are saying Donald Trump is bad, but I’m going to imply they’re not.”

The whole idea that you should be able to leave your livestock unprotected without people or animals looking after them, without some loss, is a modern invention.
