I think _variables and _environment are for interpolations at quarto render time but not sure if they're available to the quarto yaml, so we may want to open a quarto github discussion on the topic

in the meantime I think you tried “${ENVVAR}” and “{{ENVVAR}}” syntaxes, I’d also try "${{ ENV VAR }}", {{ ENV VAR }}, ${ ENV VAR}} and ${{ENV VAR}} syntaxes (the latter three without quotes) to see if any of them work

I think this deploy log looks right to me! So then the question is getting quarto to accept them in the yamls where you want them…definitely hoping that Carlos “just knows” how to do this one 😅

to paraphrase, two questions:
1) is netlify making the secrets available as envvars at build time? (check netlify-side docs and logs)
2) can we inline env vars into the quarto yaml files in question? (uh, @cscheid.net halp?)

also I’m not 100% sure you can inline environment variables to yaml files with ${{ variable }} by default, it would need to be supported by whatever was parsing the yaml (ie quarto)

@jadeynryan.bsky.social how are you configuring your secrets over on netlify? can you share any build logs? I’m not seeing any changes made to netlify.toml which is sort of where I would expect to see config updates
