I think they had long enough to ruin things last time.

NEW POST: A new report shows teachers fear education policy reforms will make things worse, not better, for children with SEND. @catrionamoore.bsky.social has explored the new survey from Bett www.specialneedsjungle.com/t...

But for many disabled children, left with no support and therapies suspended, it was disastrous. Incredibly difficult for all, but some schools did brilliantly, while others did not. Good leadership was key (as it always is). There’s been research since but no idea if government are making use of it

If parents wanted to keep their children home that’s one thing, but if they were stopped by badly applied risk assessments that’s another. The problem was inadequate guidance from government—Many schools most definitely did their best and their teachers worked harder than ever. 1

If it helps, mine had only 80% attendance but still left with good results, including an A* in English with a scribe (mind you this was an amazing specialist school)

In our second study it was the use of risk assessments that meant children, including those who needed suctioning, were told to stay home https://www.specialneedsjungle.com/scandal-children-complex-needs-not-welcome-back-school/

We carried out two SEND covid surveys and concur that there was no planning, especially in how to get children with very complex needs back to school—many were not allowed to

Doublethink by Stewart Lee @thenerve.news

Why are so many #Autistic girls & women diagnosed late, or missed altogether?

Join Dr. Clare Harrop as she unpacks the latest research on the developmental pathways of autistic girls and women, from early childhood through to adulthood. https://bit.ly/3YYg1Li

And why is it ‘the system’ or framework at fault when it’s the funding of it and the people operating it that have ruined it? These are harder things to deal with, so easier to ignore 3/3

Children’s support is not seen as a priority—just look at the CAMHS initiatives that went nowhere, and the rampant unlawfulness of LAs—why is the government not outraged about that? These reports should make clear they’re not blaming families (unless they are?) as it’s always the impression left 2/

Perhaps they’re NEET… because they’re disabled and unable to work & there’s too little help. Stats tell one part of a story, but it’s no surprise when cuts to educational and CAMHS support in the last decade have increased needs, as did the pandemic. Social media means more people know about DLA. 1/

Mine is an adult and although there are budgeting apps, the biggest hurdles are getting them to download one-and to admit there is a problem. Even though there is clearly a problem. Impulsiveness for a start and understanding spending priorities.

It’s the start of #BlackHistoryMonth and this year’s theme is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. This is especially important for Black siblings who have a disabled brother/sister. How has being a sibling shaped your experience? We’d love to share your story – email info@sibs.org.uk

That’s difficult—& won’t appreciate not being there makes him stand out more. If no needs assessment, may want to ask for one—Not Fine in School has help. Also gov guidance for children too unwell to attend—such high anxiety is an illness. GP should be able to refer for therapy. Document everything

This can only be a good thing.

too much, was too accommodating—but then remember that at the time, I had to be their safe place. I’d get them in by saying we’d find their mentor, have a chat to see how he could help. Going from one safe person to another helped. 80% attendance, still got A* and with a scribe. (specialist school)

If you know the root cause, ask him what would help? School should put in reasonable adjustments. Went through similar with youngest. Sometimes, a mental health day was the only way, others, I would wait at school with them for pastoral support to take over. With hindsight, I’ve wondered if I did …
