Whenever I write it out in the form of a timeline it makes me wonder if Jacob Frey is better at winning mayoral elections than he is at being mayor.
2017 Frey campaign winning message, against an incumbent: police and crime are the "mayor's job" and Minneapolis is "in the headlines for the wrong reasons." 2019: Frey's police chief assures city council and the public that he has imbued MPD culture with respect for "sanctity of life" and a commitment to being "truthful" 2020: turns out MPD has no respect for sanctity of life or truthfulness. 2021 Frey campaign winning message: if it wasn't for those meddling 13 bosses on the city council! 2021 election: Frey wins strong mayor powers. Plus he retains his 100% authority over police. He now has more power than any mayor before him. He's in control of all elements of city administration. 2022-2025: somehow the extra strong mayor powers don't solve the city's biggest problems. 2022: no knock MPD raid kills Amir Locke a month into 2nd term, despite Frey claims during previous year's campaign he had banned the practice. 2024: council approves record police raises and a police budget that's up $50 million since 2022. 2025 Frey campaign message: get this council off my back already!
