And take the pledges of half a billion with a grain of salt.

As Jean-François Rheault, of @velo.qc.ca puts it: « Des promesses sur 10 ans, c’est des promesses de taverne. »

"Ten-year promises are the kind of promises people make on a bar-stool."

What's more, there's no mention of the REV, the highly successful network of express bike lanes on major arteries.

Good news is that the budget allocates funds for maintaining existing bike path network.

I explain how bike lanes became an election issue in this HIGH SPEED dispatch:

...promises almost half a billion $ for bicycle infrastructure over the next decade. That sounds great, but the devil is in the details.

Funding to Bixi, the popular #bikeshare program, decreases from $14M to $5.5M over next 5 years; budget for bike path expansion cut by $10M.

This happens on a daily basis in San Francisco, where a private company, Alphabet, is beta-testing its robotaxis on public streets.

On Dec. 20 a power outage caused Waymos to stop altogether, often in intersections, causing gridlock throughout the city.
