Some years ago, I tried to learn Korean but gave up very quickly. Pronunciation and spelling made no sense to me and I couldn't retain vocabulary. Now, after learning Turkish, something has clicked, and Korean pronunciation rules seem slightly more logical.

Sunday language reflection: why do Turkish, Hindi, Persian and Korean all tend to skip the 'h' sound in their spoken forms (e.g. 'daha' becomes 'daa')? Does this sound take more effort to be uttered? Is it more expendable? Is this in any way related to Romance languages not having this sound? 🤔

If the languages you study/are interested in represent your political allegiance and, as it turns out, I'm learning Russian and Persian... does that make me an enemy of the West? 🤔

One of the reasons why I was reluctant to claim the 'autistic' label for myself was that one of the main stereotypes about autistic people is that we can't get sarcasm, subtext or double entendres (thinking about Sheldon Cooper and TBBT in particular).

Language/history fun fact of the day: in 1935, the Shah of Persia changed the name of his country to Iran.
'Iran' is related to the word 'Arya', which is how the original inhabitants of those lands called themselves in ancient times (the word was later misappropriated by a certain regime).

I wanted to launch my own website but didn't have any idea how to call it but I wanted it to be SOMETHING with POLYGLOT and wrote those words next to eachother. My now ex-husband proposed to stick with "something polyglot" and it has been my name on social media ever since.
