Firstly, thank you for providing a feedback form. I know you have already received a lot of feedback with concerns of "vagueness" in these new guidelines. I don't see these terms as being vague. In fact, I see them as crystal clear and ideal guidelines that work perfectly in a vacuum. Unfortunately, none of us live in one.
Here are my concerns with the guidelines/rules:
They are too generalized. They do not include anything on how to differentiate glorification/encouragement from critique/condemnation. That difference sounds obvious but there are plenty of ways of phrasing something to sound like a critique when it's really glorifying it, and vice versa.
They fail to acknowledge the vast difference between real harm and fictional works discussing those topics made for mature audiences. The latter may include mentions of abuse or non-consensual acts or allude to non-consent, but not really encourage those things outside of fiction. And what if they error on the side of caution? Well there is another problem with that. How big is that margin of error, and is that even a margin anymore? Is it even an error anymore? They appear to make the assumption that when there is a problem (i.e. a guideline or rule is broken), Bluesky's moderation team will always make the right judgment with respect to any missing piece or discrepancy within the rules. This does not necessarily mean that they are vague, but it means that if we are to accept them as-is, we also assume that anything that might be in some "gray area", or that exactly where some Content does or doesn't fit within them is vague, it will be judged strictly by moderators. It will require that users thoroughly trust the moderators to understand relevant nuances of the material of the Content in question, and to make good discretionary choices based on knowledge or methodology that is not covered by the guidelines (honestly I want to call these omissions). With these guidelines/rules, this would be the best case scenario and still a far cry from ideal.
In the worst case scenario, they are worded in a way that allows Content expressing specific mature themes to be misrepresented as things they are not, or as something illegal, or something damning. I believe that "vagueness" can only be used to describe the ambiguity in what was written verbatim. Are there any guidelines that you feel are overly restrictive or unclear?
This is mostly about section 2A: I am concerned that the absence of differentiation between promoting or engaging in patently dangerous or illegal behavior and patently obvious works of fiction is a problem. Notwithstanding the exceptions outlined in sections 4B and 5B, I am still concerned that there is no clear distinction between forbidden Content and the mere mention of those things could be interpreted as endorsement of them by these rules. To say that commentary is excluded appears to only apply to "Be Authentic", but not much beyond that.
Are there any important guidelines or areas related to user safety that you believe are missing or underrepresented?
