Given the availability of primary sources you should give them an assignment on these sources. Make it a scavenger hunt. Grad Students, they take more time book list wise, but do not miss the classics, their is some great stuff in older books.

My students were raving about a book they read for another CW class, "Drawn with the Sword" by McPherson, it is a series of essay and you could use it at different points in the class.

Book that cover 1, 2, 3, assign by chapters, good for more than one session, "Forever Free," by Eric Foner, covers a lot including some prewar, but also Emancipation and Reconstruction, VERY READABLE for Undergraduate.

Book for Quest 1 -undergrad. "Apostles of Disunion," by Dew (this is the commissioners who visited states considering secession, it about slavery is their message, so students get it.

Okay, when I do CW and Reconstruction, I divide the class in three Four questions, 1) Why War came 2) Why the war evolved into a war for Emancipation 3) Why did Reconstruction Fail, at least for black Americans 4) How is the war remembered. (4 is nice but it may be a small part of the course)
