Ex x-c skier, author, cat person, bad viola player with embarrassingly huge classical cd hoard, love travel (Greece!), trains, winter, single malt, chamber music. Ran a ranch/xc training center, ski tech at 3 Olympics. Episcopalian. FURIOUS at trump!
Off to Norway for the month, so the last Old Time pic: Snorre Krugstad - perfect technique in the 80's and now:

Oh Lindseybelle, sit down dear, drink some tea and try to rest; you're raving again and it makes you perspire.

Time to remember the great Gunde Svan - four gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the Winter Olympics, seven golds, three silvers, and one bronze at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

Greats of the Past: Mike Gallagher ('41 – 2013) skied in the '64, ‘68 and ’72 Olympics, 9-time U.S. Champion. Coached the USST, inducted to the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum Hall of Fame. An enthusiastic colleague with an inexhaustible supply of Irish songs. A kind, energetic and giving man.

Curmudgeonly Me - Yes, I like Biathlon. I was with the US Team in the '80's. But WHY SO LITTLE CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING?

Perfection!

My place in BC, Christmas; trails begin about 20 feet to the right.

The Past - Mika Myllylä was a top x-c skier until caught doping in 2001. He received a 2-year suspension, but failed to return to skiing, developing alcohol problems. In 2011 he was found dead at his home.
Tragedy. I remember him as a kind and friendly man with magnificent classic technique.

Golden Oldie

Örjan and Anders Blomquist - brothers - tying at the Vasaloppet

Another Grand Old Figure from skiing - Peter Hale, Madshus rep, the guy who would generously help EVERYONE, regardless of who they skied for; great spirit, dear friend, and the kindest of men.

Rarely seen out of ski clothing:

Try the Hotel Gostisce Zeravu in Ratece - small, comfortable, family run and very friendly. It's 10 minutes from KG, and at the foot of the road up to the Nordic Center.

I'm going to post a series of x-c pictures highlighting great skiers of the past, and examples of good technique. This one is a junior I'll keep anonymous for his privacy's sake.

Whole body well forward on the ankle, about to transfer weight to glide ski.

Don't know, I'm afraid. But this is my favorite picture of him, at my ranch in BC:

Yup! And here he is today, going on 70, with his foster son Ali, from Afghanistan; Thomas is a wonderful human being, and his wife Ulli is wonderful as well.
