this is my notebook, and all my thoughts are a ramble
In the cinema to watch Eddington and I can hear The Smurfs loudly chatting next door.

Went to a talk about The Great Gatsby. I'd never read the book before and I'd forgotten this talk was today, so yesterday I bought the book (free on the Kindle) and finished it this afternoon. It reminded me of when I had to read Babel in about 3 days before it was due back in the library. There's-

Just saw Hurry Up Tomorrow. Yesterday, I saw a video on YouTube talking about how it was someone's favourite movie of the year. I read a review just now of a critique saying it's a contender for the worst movie of the year. It is absolutely the type of film to garner polarising responses. I think-

Went to a talk at the RAI. Speaker made a really interesting point about how, in theory, Marxist aestheticians should love AI like ChatGPT and Gemini because they allow for a 'communal writing effort', and I'd never thought of it in those terms before. In reality, obviously that's not true, I'm-

Just finished reading Fight Club. My version of the book has an afterword that the author wrote in 2005. In it, he says the advance of the book was $6k. He calls it "an advance so small I never told anyone." He says he took it because "that would pay my rent for a year." Pay his rent??? For a YEAR??

Just saw Sinners. Finally! I was loving the music from the very first second. The moment I saw Ludwig Göransson in the credits for the music, it all made sense.

best type of feature on a song: when the featured artist takes the first verse, as if the song is their own. something about it just works like magic.

Twenty-One Pilots have a line in one of their songs - "I requested counsel with the counsellor and he cancelled twice" - which I just cannot get out of my head. It's a good line, got such a cool rhythm to it.

Saw Mickey 17. Need more time to understand how I feel about it.

Have been thinking a lot recently about characters and rationality, about how audiences nowadays seem to want characters who are perfect thinkers and perfect actors. In books especially, I love reading about characters who make bad decisions and bad things happen as a consequence. I really-

Booked to see Mickey 17 tomorrow (a £15.50 ticket 😓) Pattison has been a favourite of mine, unironically, since Twilight. Being a perfect Edward guaranteed he would be a perfect Batman - I have always argued those characters are so, so alike. I've heard mixed things about Mickey 17, so very curious.

Was really hoping for a Conclave BP win, but I did know that was wishful thinking. Anora's great, it's fine, I've never understood its hype to this extent, but I enjoyed the movie enough. Mostly shocked that the Brutalist didn't do much better - isn't it the exact type of film the Academy likes?

Hungover. Tired. But the sun outside is so pretty. Pushing myself through the final 20% of a book that is very good, but feels like homework to read. Living in a university town means nights out, like last night, have non-0% chances of boys born in 2006 calling you a 'milf'. I am 24.

I 💙📚 am two books behind schedule. I'm about to be three books behind schedule. I can feel the walls begin to crumble. Sirens are in the distance. I can't bring myself to abandon a book and so I'm stuck slogging through a book I'm not enjoying, even though I recognise that it is very good. Ahhhhhhh

Saw Hard Truths 📽️ last night. For as funny as it gets, it never stops being so sad. Can't believe Marianne Jean-Baptiste didn't get an Oscar nom for Best Actress, no way her performance wasn't among the best of last year. The film really hammers in the point that misery is so contagious, and so-

Saw an interesting comment on a video about Anora and the male gaze, and the comment mentioned Lacan's mirror stage...immediately got my ears buzzing because I've written a whole essay on Lacan's Borromean knot and I have thoughts...
