I maintain that they aren't and that we should limit immigration from countries where a representative sample of residents are cool with, for example, a medieval interpretation of Islam.

There were no such instruments in place in 19th Century America so all fear was cartoons and gossip by people half of which might not have had any sort of formal schooling.
To compare the two as if they are perfectly analogous is simply complimented by calling it "absurd."

We have polls of representative samples of Middle Eastern countries that show they have little regard for the freedoms of religion, speech, and the press - especially as it pertains to all things Islamic.

I've forgotten how this all figures into the picture of immigration from cultures that find basic American freedoms to be repugnant but I would imagine the rationale goes "You wouldn't want to be denied entry, but want to deny entry to others; therefore, you're not a good Christian."
