I have a question for mathematicians out there...

Start with a square 100 km on a side.

An inhabitant of this square has two ways to travel: walking, which can be done from any point to any point at a pace $p_w$ seconds per kilometer, or going by a train which needs laid-down tracks but goes […]

I've just come up with a sequence I can't believe isn't in the #oeis (#icbinioeis)!

Take cards labelled 1 ... N. Shuffle them.

Repeat this procedure: look at the top card's value, X. Move X cards from the top of the deck to the back, one at a time.

If you ever end up back at your first card […]

I can't be too upset by people not booking my session at #MathsConf39 because they're all booking sessions that I really want to go to instead!

From another review of The Mathematicians' Library (Amazon):

"I’m in no way a maths nerd but I’m engrossed in this book. It is fascinating and I’ve learnt so much from it so far. I’ve actually found myself going online and reading up on some of the more interesting section like fractals as well […]

My mum's dog (say hello to Dylan) likes to curl up for a sleep behind the curtain, but he does it so often the curtain needs cleaning more often than mum would like, so she made two drawstring bags out of the same material and washes them instead. Genius!
A fluffy dog hiding behind a curtain. The base of the curtain is in a bag made from the same flowery material as the curtain.

Numerologists take note: tomorrow, 27th September 2025, is a square date in both US and Everywhere Else notation.

5205² = 27092025 and 3045² = 9272025

This is the last time this will happen for a thousand years!

200 years ago today, at roughly 9am, between 450 and 600 people boarded 21 waggons with seats on them at Brusselton, County Durham, England. There were also 8 coal and one flour Waggon attached to the train, and Experiment, a closed carriage.

This train was […]

Checking the reviews for The Mathematicians' Library on Amazon (I know...), and that someone has chosen to write this has made me feel all tingly:

"It treats mathematics not as a set of dry rules to be endured, but as a living story, interwoven with culture, ideas, and discoveries. By placing […]
