Jorhat Gymkhana Club & Race Course History: 175 Years of Colonial Tea Garden Racing Heritage
The Jorhat Gymkhana Club stands as Assam's most remarkable colonial sporting legacy. Built in 1876 by British tea planters, this historic venue has hosted horse races for over 160 years. From informal gatherings near Garmur in 1850 to today's prestigious Governor's Cup, the racing tradition connects Assam's tea garden heritage with modern sporting excellence. The club emerged when British planters needed recreation from demanding tea estate duties. What began as simple horse races evolved into Asia's oldest multi-sport complex, featuring golf, polo, tennis, and cricket facilities. The 1.6-kilometer racing track has remained unchanged since 1876, testing riders and horses across generations. Colonial history lives on through bareback racing traditions and community participation. Manipuri ponies replaced British horses after Independence, ensuring continuity despite changing times. The successful 2025 races attracted 80 horses, proving this heritage remains vibrant. Today, the Jorhat Gymkhana Club bridges past and present, where colonial architecture meets modern tourism, and racing legends inspire new generations of enthusiasts.
