Very good post, I keep pointing out that there's only one step from using these on inanimate objects and then using them on people.

I should have known that a legal consultancy firm that booked me for a talk wasn’t reliable when I saw the AI slop they were using to advertise their events.

I try from time to time, but it feels like the place is hungry for drama and conflict at the moment.

I think that there's an element of cabin fever happening, the place isn't getting many new users, so people who are not using other social media start arguing over the silliest minutiae, often becoming more irascible than warranted.

After having fallen through several Bluesky rabbit holes over the weekend, I have come to the conclusion that this is not a very nice place at the moment.

Clanker, tinskin, and waterback may bring up some of the relevant discussions.

Sure, you can't dehumanise something that is not human, but that was never the complaint and the objection about the ickyness of the practice, it is the humans that are inevitably going to get targetted.

I'm bored by most of the machine slur discourse, but it's baffling that people haven't made the connection between having fun with made-up slurs for machines, and the reality of using those slurs to associate with real people who use machines. I've already seen unironic uses of "clanker-lover".

There's also the element that there's just one step from made-up slurs against machines, and those slurs being used on real people who operate machines. I've already seen several uses of "clanker lover".

I'm spending my Sunday falling down Bluesky rabbit holes instead of writing.

I guess it beats cleaning the flat.

I don't spend a lot of time here, so I am often left feeling entirely baffled by Bluesky-specific discourse that floats past in one of my feeds. I have no idea what most of you are talking about half of the time.

I just read something I wrote over 3 years ago and before AI, and I swear that it reads like AI.

Hi, it's me, I'm the problem, it's me.

Tempted again. Quetzalcoatl, give me strength.
What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!

I tried the Gemini professional headshot prompt. Nailed it.

First lecture since November of last year so my anxiety dreams have been in overdrive. Some of the classics are making an appearance, including the one where I have to go back to secondary school because I missed one class, followed by the one in which I have an exam but I didn't attend class.

The Right hacked our collective attention since 2015, this is a well-documented strategy, and we keep falling for it ever since.

"Gay immigrants are stealing children and giving them autism".

And that's the one thing everyone talks about for days. That's why you feel exhausted.

In some instances the requests come from people in developing countries, so I tend to be more understanding as there is certainly a lack of resources. But sometimes the requests come from students from more prestigious universities in Europe and the UK, and these ones tend to be a bit more entitled.
technollama.bsky.social
I understand why these requests happen, my public persona is affable and often humorous, and some people tend to paint a picture in their heads of what I'm like from my articles, social media, and blog posts; when in reality I'm very shy and introverted.

But I'm increasingly annoyed.

I get quite a few requests from PG students from other universities for help with their research, either by asking for interviews, requests for reading recommendations, and even the occasional request to read drafts or even to co-author an article.

I try to politely deny most requests.

I guess any plans to go to the US are out of the window now, huh?

I may have found the best example of parody for this year's fair dealing class. Deckmyn, eat your heart out.
